Blurb:

Willie Krenshaw wanted nothing more than a few minutes watching the waters of Lake Erie after a long workday. What she ended up with was a drugged male vampire and an itch to be a Good Samaritan.

When her inner kitty starts sniffing around at the male she's helping, she knows Fate's evil sense of humor is in full swing. Being a shifter-vampire hybrid is hard enough, but having a male vampire as her fated mate is just too much.

Nickola, the vampire she assists, finds her breathtaking and does all he can to push Fate's agenda.

Stephen is the male vampire Nickola is investigating for the Council. He takes aim at the couple, intent on pulling Nick to his side or killing him. Between Stephen's scheming and the Council's interest in Willie, can they survive the chaos long enough to test the depths of their passions?

“How’re you feeling?” the man asked her. His eyes held only concern.

How was she feeling? That was a really good question. She glanced down at her hands, expecting to see charred skin or bandages. She gasped when she saw her hands looked normal. Did she just dream the pain and fire?

“You don’t really need to answer that if you don’t want to. My name is Robert Smith. What’s yours?” The man was still watching her with an intensity she wasn’t accustomed to. He looked so normal, but her life had been ruined repeatedly over the last two days by “normal” looking people. He wore a blue and red flannel shirt that had some dark stains on it. Blood, she thought. My blood.

“Willie,” she croaked. Her throat hurt and burned. She was really thirsty. “Could I have something to drink, please?”

“Sure, just take it slow, okay?” He handed her a small plastic cup filled with ice chips and water. She sipped it like instructed while she studied him. Dark brown eyes watched her with concern and perhaps a little weariness. Tousled brown hair stuck up in random clumps giving him a rumpled look. He looked pretty normal, she thought.

“How did I get here?” she asked. She shied away from the memories that threatened to invade her mind again. The black eyes sucking her will from her, the strong hands that grabbed her arms and held her still as those sharp teeth sped toward her throat. She shivered with the memories.

“Well, I found you in the woods and brought you here. Willie, I need to talk to your parents. I’m sure they’re worried sick about you.”

“No, they aren’t worried,” She choked on the words. “They don’t give a shit about me.”

“Hey, watch the language,” Robert scolded with a scowl marring his face. “I don’t care if they care or not we have to call them. I’ve gone around the system for your treatments, but now that you’re awake we have to have someone responsible for you making decisions.”

“You can call them, but they’ll just come here to kill me. They dumped me in Old Forge. They don’t want me, and they won’t want to know that I’m alive. It’ll screw up their story.” She clenched her teeth together and lifted her chin. Unshed tears glistened in her eyes. She wouldn’t cry in front of a stranger over her parents. Shit. They weren’t her parents. No parent could drop off their teenager in the middle of nowhere and hope they died just because they weren't normal.

“What do you mean they dumped you?” He scowled and sat back. He crossed his arms across his chest and waited.

He pulled away from her mouth and swept his lips along her cheek before whispering in her ear, letting his breath blow across her flesh. “You taste of beer and innocence, my dearest Renae.”

She whimpered in his arms and sagged against him a moment before he pressed his lips to her neck. He could feel her blood rushing just below her skin, calling to him. Her scent was so much stronger where her hair had held it captive against her neck. He groaned before licking lightly along her pulse. The properties of his saliva would numb the area and would draw her blood vessels closer to his lips. That was the predator’s reasoning. The male’s reasoning for licking her skin was to capture a taste of her and to take it into his body. A slow stroke of his tongue over the throbbing vein had him moaning. She tasted divine.

He struck quickly, forcing his canines to push from his gums the instant before they penetrated her skin. She squeaked and bowed her body against his before relaxing completely. Vampire bites weren’t painful unless the biter wanted them to be. Alex definitely didn’t want to inflict pain. He allowed his saliva to flow freely within his mouth, bathing her skin as he sipped from the four puncture wounds he’d created. It would give her a euphoric feeling that probably bordered on arousing. He grinned as she whimpered and moved against his body, rubbing her pelvis against his. For some, vampire saliva could induce orgasms. It seemed his sweet victim was one of those lucky humans. She was going to experience the full joy of being with an aged vampire while he made the connection with her mind.

As he drew the first mouthful of blood from her body, he let her taste play over his palate. He’d drunk from thousands, hundreds of thousands, of humans. He was always interested in how different each one tasted. Everything a human took into their bodies affected the taste of their blood. Foods, drugs, drink, airborne pollutants, all could change the essence and texture. Much like how the environment changed the flavor profile of a wine because of what surroundings the grapes grew in. Renae’s natural essence was a wonderful mix of sweet and spicy. She had an overtone of dark chocolate or coffee that was enough to make him moan. She tasted of sensuality and home.

He swallowed the first sip and fully meant to seal the punctures, but he pulled another mouthful. After his third or fourth draw from her vein, and with the scent of her arousal filling his lungs, he made his tongue swipe over the small holes he had made, forced himself to seal the wounds and slowly pull his mouth from her skin. She was still moving against him, rubbing his throbbing erection. Her breaths were coming in short, stuttered gasps. Her body temperature had spiked, and a fine sheen of sweat covered her neck. He realized she was close to a release, and they were standing in the middle of the dance floor. He needed to get her away from the other humans to either give her relief, or to fuzz her memory so her body could calm.

About Lea Barrymire

Lea lives in Western New York with her hubby, three children, and miscellaneous critters. Before the rugrats, she lived a life of adventure, following her husband all over Europe with the US military. She’s slept in a car outside Paris, drove six hours just to see tulips in the Netherlands, and knocked ash from her shoes at Pompeii. Now she spends her time in life’s adventures at soccer games, PTA meetings and school plays.

Lea has loved reading from a very young age, spending many sleepless nights devouring books. Science fiction and paranormal were her favorite genres to read as a teenager, and that love bled into her adult life. She started writing during a bout of insomnia, to fill time, and found it filled a creative void. Now she communes regularly with the characters in her head and tries not to laugh out loud when they say something funny.

When Lea isn’t reading, writing or corralling kids, she enjoys watching movies and sciencey shows, or just kicking back and listening to some music.
